Unfortunately, I still need JS for some things to work properly. You're welcome to keep it disabled, but the onus is on you if some things don't work (I promise I'll get around to fixing it)...

2016-12-11 | Black Box Theory

When you sit down for dinner, do you think about where your meal came from? When you use a computer, do you care where each and every component came from, and how it works? When you go to buy clothes, do you think about how the clothes were made or how many meetings were held in order for that shirt to make it into the store?

Probably not, and I would question what you're doing with your life if you do.

There may be an official name for this, but I will call it the black box theory. It means that for any system, be it food production, a city, technology, fashion, government, etc, it is possible to represent specific processes as functions that it's not important how the insides work, just that if one thing goes in, then an expected thing comes out. A very easy to understand example of this would be 1+2=3 where the function is '+', the things being put in are 1 and 2, and the thing coming out is 3.

Another function would be the military. People, money, and an ideology go in, and a war comes out. Regardless of what system it is, expected things go in, expected things come out. So if we can represent everything in this fashion, how can that be beneficial?

One way would be to completely understand how something works from start to finish, but then making the individual components modular so that they can interact with one another in a highly predictable, and thereby controllable, fashion. This can allow the parts to streamline themselves so that the process can be achieved more efficiently.

Here's where things get interesting. Each black box can contain more black boxes, which means that if a higher level black box streamlines itself so that another box can be axed, then the entire box can just go away.

Certain instances of this may include a machine on a food production line that stacks cookies into boxes. That machine could easily be absorbed into the preceding and following machines who bag the packages and send them off to be palleted, respectively. Another example would be both the Asset Recovery as well as the vast number of administrative officers who could easily be condensed to a fraction of the size.

Feel free to take those latter examples with a grain of salt; I just happen to have a strong opinion on how bloated things ought to be compressed into significantly more efficient. Nevertheless, I'd urge you once again to keep in mind the structures of ideologies around you so that you are able to understand the connections between everything from your morning ritual, to the workings of the world.
