This past week NASA's EM Drive proposition passed peer review, which is no small feat unto itself, seeing as it appears to break Newton's third law. The glorious thing about science though, in my personal opinion, is that it bows to what is observes, regardless of what its followers believe. Hence, a new theory of inertia is under developement! The actual physics behind it are quite a bit more technical than I understand, but if you feel inclined to read about the Unruh effect, do indulge yourself. Nevertheless, the fact that we could have significantly lighter, and far more efficient, spacecraft is a truly thrilling thing. Currently the drive produces only twice the thrust of that of a light sail, but very little developement has occured in an engineering sense seeing as, again, the physics behind it are completely unknown.
To see where this tech quite literally takes off will certainly push us farther into the future. As usual, I must issue a word of warning. What will happen when we actually run out of ideas? What happens when everything that can be created, is created? This isn't something for anyone to worry about for the next few millenia, but perhaps something to keep in the back of your mind so that you remember to exercise your creative bone every once in a while.
