Starting at the end of 2021, I made a welder out of microwave oven transformers. Needless to say it didn't work very well as a combination of no current control, bad contacts, and inexperience on my part, so I broke down and bought a professionally made welder.
I use 1/8 and 1/16in E6013 for all of my projects. While I have been learning significant amounts since I've never welded prior to my home made one, my welds are still unsightly and unusable for anything but non-bearing pieces and art (which is mostly what I make anyway because it's fun).
Toward the end of 2022 I started forging and welding railroad spikes for christmas presents and fell in love with the process of making the art, and as I gather more experience and materials, I plan on making larger and more complex pieces.
